Masterclass on IATF 16949 (ENGLISH)
The automotive industry requires that all its suppliers implement a uniform quality management system. Previously the technical requirements for such a quality management system were defined in ISO/TS 16949, a standard which was jointly prepared by the ISO and the International Automotive Task Force (IATF).
In 2016, a new technical specification replaced this standard, namely IATF 16949. IATF 16949 was developed based on the internationally-recognised ISO 9001:2015 standard.
The new IATF 16949 standard, which was presented in October 2016, builds upon the requirements of ISO/TS 16949. It was supplemented with new requirements, however, and ambiguities were corrected.
The key aspects of the internationally-recognised IATF 16949:2016 are:
- risk management
- supplier management
- stimulate continuous improvement
- minimise variation
- reduce waste
- avoid errors
Integration with ISO 9001 quality systems
IATF 16949 is not just another technical specification or a new quality management system (QMS) for automotive manufacturers and their suppliers.
Instead companies in the automotive industry are expected to integrate the requirements of IATF 16949 into their ISO 9001 quality system. IATF 16949:2016 was developed based on the most recent ISO 9001 norm, the internationally-recognised standard for developing a quality management system.
As is the case with ISO 9001, the overall objective of IATF 16949 is to help organisations adopt a process approach, which improves the quality and efficiency of their operations. The introduction of IATF 16949 will also help the organisation continuously improve.
Compulsory transition by 2018
The automotive industry requires suppliers to have a quality system that is certified according to industry requirements. Companies that are currently certified according to ISO/TS 16949:2009 will therefore have to undergo re-certification by 14 September 2018. Since1 October 2017, all audits must be conducted according to the new IATF norm.
